Province of Ascoli Piceno
Ascoli Piceno is one of Italy's most beautiful art cities. Piazza del Popolo, entirely paved in polished travertine, is enclosed by the Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo and the Church of San Francesco. The famous Art Nouveau Caffè Meletti (1907) was frequented by Hemingway, Sartre, and Trilussa. The Duomo preserves Carlo Crivelli's polyptych (1473), an absolute masterpiece. The Ventidio Basso Theater and over 200 monuments make Ascoli an open-air museum. Every August, the Quintana, a medieval historical re-enactment, takes place.

Sentinum, Suasa, Potentia, Urbs Salvia, Falerio: many major ancient settlements never became modern cities and now re-emerge as archaeological landscapes.

Weapons, jewellery and rich grave goods found near Ascoli revealed a Lombard presence far more complex than had been imagined.

Travertine unites squares, churches, towers and palaces in a strikingly harmonious urban landscape.

Districts, knights and historical parades make the Quintana one of Le Marche's most distinctive historical re-enactments.

Warriors, burial grounds, Adriatic trade and a culture whose traces stretch from the Foglia to the Tronto: a journey into the earliest origins of the Marche.

Behind one of Le Marche's culinary symbols lies a specific variety, Ascolana Tenera, and a PDO with far stricter rules than many people imagine.
