Province of Ascoli Piceno
The Fortress of Acquaviva Picena (14th century) is one of the best preserved medieval fortresses in Italy, built by the Duke of Atri Andrea Matteo Acquaviva. Quadrangular plan with corner towers, it preserves original rooms, walkways and drawbridges. It houses a charming Museum of Ancient Weapons. The village preserves its medieval fabric intact, with alleys, squares and the ancient tradition of 'pajarole' (straw baskets).

Weapons, jewellery and rich grave goods found near Ascoli revealed a Lombard presence far more complex than had been imagined.

Districts, knights and historical parades make the Quintana one of Le Marche's most distinctive historical re-enactments.

The fortress overlooks the village, telling a story of centuries of conflict, territorial control and military architecture in Piceno.

Behind one of Le Marche's culinary symbols lies a specific variety, Ascolana Tenera, and a PDO with far stricter rules than many people imagine.
