Province of Fermo
The Fermo side of the Sibillini includes the municipalities of Amandola, Montefortino, Montemonaco and Smerillo. From Montemonaco, legendary excursions depart towards Monte Sibilla (2,173 m) and the Cave of the Sibyl, mentioned in numerous esoteric and prophetic medieval traditions. The Gole dell'Infernaccio are a spectacular canyon carved by the Tenna river, passable on foot up to the Hermitage of San Leonardo.
Monte Sibilla
2,173 m

The Apennine Sibyl turned a mountain cave into one of the most enigmatic places in the medieval European imagination.

Transhumance connected pastures, valleys and distant territories. Many Apennine trails still bear traces of that pastoral world.

This village in the Fermano faces the Sibilla mountains and preserves a history linked to Apennine trade and Sibillini culture.
