A sanctuary above the Aso valley

At La Cuma, outside Monte Rinaldo, columns interrupt the farmland. They belong to a sanctuary built from the mid-second century BC, when Picenum was undergoing the transformations of the Roman world. [1]

Several building phases preceded abandonment in the first century AD. This was not a single unchanged building: later interventions, collapses, stone removal and ground instability complicate reconstruction of its history. [1][2]

    Columns, decoration and open questions

Archaeologists identified a double-columned portico, a temple and a rectangular building of uncertain function. Architectural orders and proportions suggest substantial investment. Missing evidence should not be replaced by an imaginative reconstruction presented as certainty. [2]

Excavations began in 1957 and continued in subsequent years. The civic museum brings visitors closer to fragments less legible on site. We remain cautious about the cult's dedication, rather than assigning the complex to a deity with certainty. [2]

    From landscape to artefacts

Treat site and museum as one experience: outdoors, observe the portico's relation to the slope; among the artefacts, examine decorative details. Moving from landscape to fragments helps explain archaeological research. [2]

Check municipal and museum information for booking and access before leaving. Monte Rinaldo village complements the visit but is separate from the archaeological area: check your navigation destination. [1][2]
