    Lake Pilate

    Province of Ascoli Piceno

Lake Pilato is the only lake of glacial origin in the Marche and one of the highest in the Apennines (1,940 m). It is located in a hollow between Monte Vettore and Cima del Redentore, in the Sibillini National Park. It has the characteristic 'spectacle' shape due to the presence of two basins connected by an isthmus. It hosts a unique endemic species in the world: the Chirocephalus del Marchesoni, a small pinkish crustacean. Legend links it to the death of Pontius Pilate.
