    19 February 1797 inside a palace

On 19 February 1797 Palazzo Parisani Bezzi hosted the signing of the Peace of Tolentino between the French Republic and the Papal States. Napoleon Bonaparte was still the general of the Italian campaign, not the emperor of familiar portraits: the revolutionary context changes the scene’s meaning. [1][2]

For the town, it was a sudden entry into European history. The negotiations concerned far more than Tolentino: papal delegates acted under pressure from French military victories. The palace rooms connect a domestic setting of furnishings and interiors with far-reaching territorial decisions. [1][2]

    A peace with a price

The conditions included papal renunciation of Avignon, the cession of Bologna, Ferrara and Romagna, and heavy financial obligations. Bologna’s Salaborsa Library chronology reads these terms from the viewpoint of a directly affected territory, widening the story beyond the victor alone. [2]

The name “peace” therefore does not imply a balance between the parties. The treaty revealed shifting power during the Italian campaign. It is distinct from the Battle of Tolentino in 1815: the same town, but different protagonists, circumstances and political moment. [2][3]

    Finding diplomacy in the rooms

The Napoleonic Rooms provide a material setting for this episode. Rather than imagining a generic imperial scene, picture negotiations in 1797 within an aristocratic residence. The contrast between the scale of the rooms and that of the consequences makes the place compelling. [1]

Before planning entry, ask the civic museums about actual opening and visiting arrangements at Palazzo Parisani Bezzi. If the interiors are unavailable, retain it as an exterior urban stop rather than assuming that all historic rooms can be visited. [1]
